ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday lauded the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for its “extraordinary efforts and remarkable achievements” in combating financial corruption across Pakistan, highlighting the Bureau’s growing role in strengthening transparency, accountability, and public trust in government institutions.

Speaking at a ceremony at the Prime Minister’s House to mark International Anti-Corruption Day, the prime minister underscored that NAB operates with full institutional independence, emphasizing that the federal government “does not believe in political victimization through NAB.”

Addressing participants as the chief guest, PM Shehbaz said Pakistan observes International Anti-Corruption Day this year with renewed resolve to intensify its fight against financial crimes. The 2025 theme, “United with Youth Against Corruption: Building an Honest and Dignified Future,” highlights the pivotal role of the nation’s youth in shaping a transparent and prosperous society. “Our youth are our most valuable asset and the guarantee of a peaceful, prosperous and developed future,” he noted, stressing that corruption-free societies are essential for economic stability, public trust, and sustainable development.

The prime minister reiterated that ensuring financial, administrative, and institutional transparency across all government projects remains a top priority. He said International Anti-Corruption Day provides an opportunity for nations to renew their commitment to discouraging corruption and building accountable societies. He also praised NAB for swift action that provides redress to citizens affected by organized financial crimes, strengthening public confidence in the institution.

NAB Chairman Lt Gen (R) Nazir Ahmed briefed the prime minister and attendees on the Bureau’s performance, revealing that in 2025, enhanced cooperation with state institutions enabled recoveries exceeding Rs5.1 trillion, while reforms since 2022 have significantly improved NAB’s effectiveness. He said hosting the ceremony at the Prime Minister’s House reflects the government’s firm commitment to accountability and transparency.

The event concluded with the distribution of honorary shields to NAB officers, while the PM directed that high-performing officials be rewarded with three honoraria or an opportunity to perform Umrah. A representative of UNODC read a message from UN Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs, Felipe Paullier.
