RAWALPINDI: The superintendent of Adiala Jail has firmly denied allegations that Imran Khan, the incarcerated leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been operating his X account from within the prison.
In a report submitted to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in response to a petition requesting the termination of such activities, the superintendent clarified that Khan remains under strict surveillance and has no access to devices capable of connecting to the internet.
The superintendent stressed that both Khan and the jail staff assigned to him undergo regular searches, with no prohibited items, including mobile phones, ever being found. The report also mentioned that mobile signal jammers have been installed in the facility, blocking any signals within Adiala Jail and the surrounding areas, thus preventing the operation of online accounts from inside the prison.
In response to the allegations, the superintendent explained that Khan’s X account is being managed by individuals outside the jail, with no connection to the prison. He further confirmed that the former prime minister has only been granted facilities as per jail regulations or court orders.
This clarification comes as the IHC hears a petition seeking the removal of unlawful or disruptive posts from Khan’s account, and an order to prevent similar content from being posted in the future. The petitioner has raised concerns that Khan’s online activities while in detention could potentially incite unrest and disturb public order.
Last year, PTI leader Raoof Hasan had claimed that Khan’s official X account was being run from the United States, where the party’s social media team is based.
