LAHORE: The smog crisis in Punjab shows no sign of easing, as the air quality in Lahore remains dangerously polluted. The “City of Gardens” is once again blanketed in a thick haze, with air quality indices reaching alarming levels across multiple areas.
According to the latest data, Lahore’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) has been recorded at 275, placing it firmly in the “hazardous” category. Several neighborhoods reported even higher readings, including Ravi Road (302), Lower Mall (515), Iqbal Town (517), Sanda Road (497), FC College (466), and Saddar Cantt (437). Other major cities in Punjab are also struggling — Faisalabad recorded an AQI of 410, while Multan reached 367.
Environmental experts have warned that the continuously rising pollution levels pose serious health risks to residents. They have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, wear protective masks outdoors, and refrain from outdoor activities, especially in the early morning hours.
Meanwhile, a grand anti-smog operation is underway across Punjab to curb air pollution. The Transport and Mass Transit Department remains active around the clock, targeting smoke-emitting vehicles.
A recent departmental report revealed that between November 1 and 8, officials inspected 4,184 vehicles in Lahore. Violations led to 877 challans and 288 vehicles being impounded for lacking fitness certificates or emitting excessive smoke.
Additionally, 671 goods transport vehicles were fined for overloading, with total penalties amounting to Rs 8 million. Authorities further reported that 255 FIRs have been registered so far, and 208 drivers have been arrested for repeated violations under the anti-smog campaign.
