Saudi Arabia to build world’s first ‘Sky Stadium’ for 2034 FIFA World Cup

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has unveiled plans to build the world’s first-ever “Sky Stadium” as part of its bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The groundbreaking project is set to be part of the NEOM mega-city development and aims to be a monumental step in the country’s ambitions to become a global sports powerhouse.

The stadium, located 350 meters above the desert floor, will seat 46,000 spectators and is designed to operate entirely on solar and wind power, making it one of the most sustainable sports venues ever built. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with completion slated for 2032, well ahead of the World Cup.

Integrated into NEOM’s “The Line,” a futuristic linear city, the stadium promises to set new benchmarks in both sports architecture and eco-friendly infrastructure. However, the project’s elevated position presents significant engineering challenges related to safety, accessibility, and ventilation.

Despite these hurdles, FIFA has given its preliminary endorsement, recognizing the stadium as a potential model for sustainable sports infrastructure. Alongside the Sky Stadium, Saudi Arabia has announced plans for 15 new stadiums, including the King Salman International Stadium in Riyadh, which will have a capacity of over 92,000 when completed in 2029.
