ISLAMABAD: A senior police officer posted in the capital died on Thursday after sustaining critical injuries from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot near Serena Chowk, officials said.
According to police officials, the officer, serving as Superintendent of Police (SP) Industrial Area, was rushed to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), where he succumbed to his injuries. Police teams cordoned off the area, collected forensic evidence, and launched a detailed investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident.
According to police sources, the SP, a respected officer of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), had recently assumed charge in Islamabad. A day before the tragedy, he had visited psychiatrist Dr Sultan Muhammad at his private clinic, expressing suicidal thoughts. The doctor advised him to take leave and get admitted to PIMS, but the officer reportedly said his leave application had not been approved.
The psychiatrist also asked the officer’s wife to remove any firearms, knives, or sharp objects from his access.
The deceased held an MPhil in governance and public policy from the National Defence University (NDU) and had previously served across Balochistan, gaining experience in security management, human rights protection, and counter-terrorism. Colleagues described him as a “humble and dedicated officer” who maintained professionalism under pressure.
Addressing a press conference alongside Islamabad Inspector General (IGP) Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said the case was being investigated with “complete transparency and sensitivity.”
Rizvi said the incident occurred around 4:30pm while the SP was returning to his office from Constitution Avenue. Responding to questions about a possible phone call before the incident, the IGP said it was “too early” to draw conclusions and that CCTV footage showed “no sign of external involvement.”
Chaudhry urged the media to avoid speculation and respect the bereaved family’s privacy, saying, “This is a human tragedy—we must handle it with empathy and responsibility.”
