BEIJING: A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Wednesday urged the European Union (EU) to adhere to the principles of dialogue and consultation in addressing trade differences, amid reports that the two sides have agreed to hold emergency talks in Brussels on China’s export controls on rare earths.
Spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the remarks at a regular press briefing in response to a question on comments by an EU Commission official regarding the upcoming meeting.
Guo said the China-EU economic and trade relationship is by nature complementary and mutually beneficial.
“We hope the European side will honor its commitment to supporting free trade and opposing trade protectionism, and provide enterprises from all countries with a fair, transparent and non-discriminatory business environment,” he said.
The spokesperson added that China and the EU should uphold the principles of the market economy and the rules of the World Trade Organization and resolve trade differences properly through dialogue and consultation.
