LAHORE: The 9th Sheheryar Malik Memorial Pakistan Open Tennis Championship 2025 continued in full swing at the Sports Board Punjab Tennis Academy, Nishtar Park, Lahore.
The second day of the prestigious national event witnessed over 35 exciting matches across multiple categories, as top-seeded players displayed exceptional skill and dominance on the courts.
In the men’s singles pre-quarterfinals, Pakistan’s top-ranked player Aqeel Khan maintained his superb form, securing a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory over Haziq Areejo. Muzamil Murtaza followed suit with an emphatic 6-0, 6-0 win against Ahmad Chaudhary, while Muhammad Shoaib overpowered Hamza Ali Rizwan 6-4, 6-0.
Barkat Ullah also advanced with a confident 6-3, 6-2 win over Ahmad Babar, and Abubakar Talha outclassed Jabir Ali 6-2, 6-2. In other notable results, Yousaf Khalil defeated M Talha Khan 6-2, 6-4, Muhammad Abid got past Hassan Riaz 6-3, 6-3, and Mudassar Murtaza dominated Muhammad Ahtesham 6-2, 6-0 to book his place in the quarterfinals.
In the ladies’ singles quarterfinals, top seed Ushna Suhail continued her winning run with a clinical 6-0, 6-1 win over Fajar Fayyaz, while Shimza Naz staged an impressive comeback to defeat Esha Jawad 6-7, 6-2, 4-1 (retired). Mehaq Khokhar overcame Hajra Sohail 6-3, 6-1, and Labika Durab prevailed over Maleeha Khalid 6-3, 6-3 in another competitive fixture.
In the men’s doubles pre-quarterfinals, the experienced pair of Aqeel Khan and Shehzad Khan breezed past Hassan Riaz and Ashar Khan 6-2, 6-2, while Faizan Fayyaz and Hamza Ali Rizwan registered a solid 6-3, 6-3 win against Mubeen Akram and Haseeb Ayaz Malik. Ahmad Babar and Saqib Hayat secured a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 victory over Muhammad Abid and M Waqas Malik, Mudassar Murtaza and Heera Ashiq comfortably beat Muhammad Ahtesham and Haziq Areejo 6-2, 6-0, and Abubakar Talha and Ahmad Nael Qureshi advanced with a 6-1, 6-2 win over M Huzaifa Khan and M Talha Khan.
The boys’ U-12 pre-quarterfinals saw dominant performances from the country’s promising young talents. Muhammad Ayan, Daniyal (KPK), Muhammad Muaz, and Shayan Afridi all registered convincing straight-set victories, while M Ibraheem Hussain Gill and Mustafa Uzair Rana also sealed comfortable wins to reach the next round.
In the seniors 55+ doubles quarterfinals, the experienced duo of Gen Hilal and Sq Ldr Hasib Baig displayed excellent coordination and court control to defeat Dr Arif and Kamran Qureshi in straight sets.
