GWADAR: A massive fire ripped through a cluster of boats laden with diesel and petrol in the Kantani Hor area of Jiwani on Balochistan’s coast, destroying at least six vessels and more than 20 motorcycles, officials said on Saturday.
The blaze reportedly began on a small fuel-laden boat before spreading rapidly to nearby vessels and parked motorcycles. Witnesses said the flames shot high into the night sky, visible from several kilometres away.
Preliminary reports suggest the fire was triggered by a fuel leak followed by an electrical short circuit. Officials said the boats were allegedly being used for diesel and petrol smuggling and were carrying large quantities of fuel that intensified the flames.
Firefighters and rescue teams rushed to the site, but efforts to contain the blaze were delayed by poor access and rough terrain. The fire was brought under control after several hours using water and foam.
Sources said the fire’s intensity was so high that several boats were reduced to ashes. The destroyed motorcycles were believed to have been used to transport smuggled fuel. Initial estimates suggest financial losses worth tens of millions of rupees.
A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the area is notorious for smuggling of fuel and other goods from Iran. “The cause of the fire could be accidental or deliberate. We are recording statements of witnesses to determine the facts,” the officer said.
The incident has drawn renewed attention to the rampant smuggling trade along Balochistan’s coast. In July this year, a smuggling boat caught fire near Gwadar, injuring five people, while in March, an explosion at a diesel storage warehouse in Jiwani caused major damage.
Experts warn that repeated fuel-related fires pose serious environmental threats, as burning fuel releases toxic fumes and contaminates coastal waters, endangering marine life.
Residents have urged the government to curb smuggling and strengthen coastal monitoring. “Our livelihoods depend on fishing,” said one fisherman. “Smuggling is bringing danger and destruction to our community.”
Authorities confirmed the fire has been fully extinguished and that no casualties have been reported. Police have cordoned off the site and launched an investigation.
The incident underscores the urgent need for stronger surveillance and enforcement measures along Balochistan’s coastal belt, officials said.
