QUETTA: A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Balochistan, including the provincial capital Quetta, on Sunday evening, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
The quake was recorded at 6:29pm, about 65 kilometres west of Quetta, at a depth of 25 kilometres, with its epicentre located at Latitude 30.19°N and Longitude 66.33°E, the PDMA said in a statement.
The authority added that the tremors, felt across Quetta and nearby districts, were of mild to moderate intensity. No immediate reports of casualties or damage to property have been received so far.
“The Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC) of PDMA Balochistan is in coordination with district disaster management authorities to assess the situation,” the statement said.
Residents of Quetta and surrounding towns reported brief but noticeable shaking, with some leaving their homes as a precaution. Authorities said monitoring teams were on alert and would issue updates if any aftershocks or damage reports emerged.
Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province by area, lies in a seismically active zone and frequently experiences moderate to strong earthquakes.
Earlier this year, on June 30, a 5.5-magnitude quake struck Musakhail district, injuring five people and damaging dozens of mud houses. Two weeks earlier, on June 15, a 3.2-magnitude tremor was felt in Pasni and Karachi, underscoring the region’s continued seismic vulnerability.
