India to raise trophy dispute with ICC after Asia Cup controversy

DELHI: India has confirmed it will raise the issue of the Asia Cup 2025 trophy dispute with the International Cricket Council (ICC) following a controversial incident during the post-match ceremony. The Indian team refused to accept the winner’s trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi after defeating Pakistan by five wickets in the final in Dubai.

The move, reportedly directed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), came amid tensions surrounding Naqvi’s position as both ACC President and Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the Indian team chose not to receive the trophy from Naqvi due to his role in Pakistan cricket.

The refusal led to a brief delay in the presentation ceremony, during which Pakistan players collected their runners-up medals, while India left without their trophy. Presenter Simon Doull confirmed the ceremony’s conclusion without the trophy handover to the Indian team.

The incident follows a series of political tensions, including Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav’s refusal to shake hands with Pakistan’s Salman Ali Agha during their group-stage game. The BCCI has now confirmed plans to file a formal complaint against Naqvi during the ICC’s November meeting.

This comes after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi controversially linked the Asia Cup win to “Operation Sindoor,” a series of Indian military strikes in Pakistan.
