DELHI: India’s military is set to conduct a major drone and counter-drone exercise next month to enhance its air defences, following a recent conflict with Pakistan in which unmanned aerial systems (UAS) played a significant role.
In the aftermath of the four-day clash, both India and Pakistan have accelerated their drone development efforts, fueling what analysts describe as a drone arms race. In addition to the exercise, India has announced plans to build an indigenous air defence system, named ‘Sudarshan Chakra,’ by 2035, drawing comparisons to Israel’s ‘Iron Dome.’
The exercise, called ‘Cold Start,’ will be the largest of its kind in India and is scheduled for the first week of October. It will involve testing various drones and counter-drone systems to strengthen the country’s air defences. Senior officials, including Air Marshal Rakesh Sinha, confirmed that the exercise would feature participation from defence industry experts and researchers.
The event will recreate some aspects of the drone warfare witnessed during the May conflict with Pakistan. Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff, explained that the Sudarshan Chakra system will integrate drones, aircraft, and counter-hypersonic capabilities to ensure a robust defence. He also acknowledged that Pakistan is advancing its own capabilities, emphasizing the need for India to stay ahead in this technological race.
