Pakistan files official complaint with ICC over Fakhar Zaman’s controversial dismissal against India

ISLAMABAD: The tension between Pakistan and India in the 2025 Asia Cup continues to escalate, with Pakistan lodging an official complaint to the International Cricket Council (ICC) over a controversial decision involving Fakhar Zaman’s dismissal in Sunday’s match.

Fakhar, who was batting well, was given out by third umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge in the third over of Pakistan’s innings. The incident occurred when Fakhar edged the third ball of the over to India’s wicketkeeper Sanju Samson, who took a low catch. The decision was reviewed by the third umpire, who upheld the on-field call despite the replays being inconclusive. Many felt the evidence provided was insufficient to support the decision, which led to immediate criticism on social media.

The Pakistan team and fans were visibly frustrated with the call, as Fakhar seemed animated as he walked off the field. Former cricketers and supporters voiced their concerns over the use of technology and the decision-making process of the TV umpire. The dismissal, coming at a critical moment when Fakhar was settling in, sparked intense debate over whether the match could have unfolded differently had the decision gone in Pakistan’s favor.

This is not the first time Pakistan has raised concerns about umpiring decisions against India in high-profile encounters. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had already filed a complaint earlier in the tournament regarding match referee Andy Pycroft’s conduct after the first encounter between the two teams.

With the ICC now reviewing the complaint, the Pakistan team has called for a transparent explanation regarding the controversial dismissal. Fakhar’s departure remains one of the most debated moments of the tournament, highlighting how a single decision can intensify the rivalry between the two cricketing giants. With another potential meeting between the teams still on the horizon, the dispute over officiating is likely to continue to fuel tensions.
