Landslide flattens Sudan village, kills more than 1,000

DARFUR: A devastating landslide in Sudan’s western Darfur region has buried an entire village, killing more than 1,000 people. The disaster struck the village of Tarasin in the Jebel Marra area on Sunday after several days of heavy rain, according to the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM).

The SLM reported that only one survivor has been found after the landslide, which the group described as “massive and devastating.” The group has appealed to the United Nations and other aid organizations for assistance in recovering the bodies still trapped under the mud and debris.

Images shared by the SLM showed the extent of the disaster, with large sections of the mountainside collapsing and burying the village under thick mud, uprooted trees, and destroyed structures. The disaster comes amid ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has already caused widespread humanitarian crises across the country.

The Jebel Marra region, known for its rugged volcanic terrain, is prone to landslides, especially during the rainy season. Previous landslides, such as one in 2018, have claimed lives, but this recent disaster is among the worst in the region’s history.

Darfur’s army-aligned governor, Minni Minnawi, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, describing it as a “humanitarian tragedy that goes beyond the borders of the region.” He called on international humanitarian organizations to urgently provide support.

Access to the affected area is severely restricted due to the ongoing conflict between Sudan’s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), making it difficult for aid organizations to reach those in need. The conflict has displaced millions, further complicating the delivery of vital assistance.

Since the conflict began in April 2023, Sudan has experienced widespread violence, leading to the death of tens of thousands and the displacement of millions. The humanitarian crisis has left millions in desperate need of food, shelter, and medical care.
