MOSCOW: Russia has strongly condemned the United States over its recent strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, calling the move a “blatant violation” of international law and a threat to global security.
In a statement released on Sunday, Moscow criticised the attacks, which were carried out in the early hours of 22 June, as reckless and illegal, warning they could trigger a wider conflict in the Middle East.
“The decision to launch missile and aerial strikes on the territory of a sovereign state, regardless of the justifications offered, constitutes a blatant violation of the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions,” the Russian foreign ministry said.
Russia expressed particular concern that the operation was conducted by a permanent member of the UN Security Council, a body that has repeatedly ruled such actions unacceptable.
Moscow also warned of the potential radioactive consequences of the strikes, stating that the full impact remains unclear but that the escalation poses serious risks to regional and global stability.
The attacks, it said, have also “dealt a substantial blow” to the global nuclear non-proliferation regime, undermining the credibility of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the integrity of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Russia urged the IAEA leadership to respond “promptly, professionally and transparently,” and called on the UN Security Council to take a firm stance against what it described as “confrontational and destabilising” actions by both the US and Israel.
“We call for an immediate end to aggression and for renewed efforts to bring the situation back onto a peaceful, diplomatic track,” the statement concluded.
