ISLAMABAD: US President Donald Trump hosted Field Marshal Asim Munir in an unprecedented meeting at the White House on Wednesday, praising the Pakistani military leader for playing a key role in averting a war between Pakistan and India. Trump commended Munir for his efforts to prevent further escalation of tensions between the two nuclear powers, which came dangerously close to conflict earlier this year.
During a lunch meeting at the Oval Office, Trump discussed a range of regional issues, including the situation in Iran. Trump acknowledged Pakistan’s understanding of both Iran and Israel, noting that while Pakistan is not aligned with Israel, it has valuable insights into the region’s dynamics. “Maybe they know Iran better, but they see what’s going on,” Trump said, referring to the situation in the Middle East.
The meeting marked a significant shift in US-Pakistan relations, which had been strained under Trump and his predecessor, Joe Biden, as both sought closer ties with India. Trump emphasized that his primary reason for hosting Munir was to thank him for helping de-escalate tensions with India, preventing a potential nuclear conflict. “I wanted to thank him for not going into the war, just ending the war,” Trump stated.
Reflecting on the broader implications, Trump said, “That could have been a nuclear war. Those are two nuclear powers – big, big nuclear powers.” He also highlighted the importance of leadership in preventing the conflict from escalating.
The meeting lasted over two hours, with discussions centered on strengthening bilateral ties, regional stability, and the ongoing situation in the Middle East. It was the first time a US president hosted a Pakistani army chief exclusively at the White House, underscoring the growing importance of Pakistan in US foreign policy.
Trump also mentioned that trade agreements were being pursued with both Pakistan and India, a rare acknowledgment of Pakistan’s economic potential. He expressed admiration for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and revealed that he had spoken with him the previous night. Trump reiterated his role in bringing about the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, crediting both military leaders for their influence in preventing a larger conflict.
While no official statement has been issued from the Pakistani side, sources indicated that the meeting was conducted in a cordial atmosphere. Further talks with other US officials are expected in the coming days.
