At the Blue Economy and Finance Forum in Monaco, Prince William delivered a powerful speech that underscored the urgency of ocean conservation. Addressing an audience of 1,800 attendees, he stated, “If we save the sea, we save the world.” His words carried a sense of urgency as he highlighted the oceans’ role in generating half of the world’s oxygen, regulating the climate, and sustaining over three billion people.
William emphasized the accelerating threats to these vital ecosystems, identifying rising sea temperatures, plastic pollution, and overfishing as the primary dangers. “What once seemed like an abundant resource is diminishing before our eyes,” he warned, calling for collective responsibility to address the crisis.
Taking Action for a Sustainable Future
Beyond his public addresses, Prince William has taken concrete steps to combat environmental degradation. His Earthshot Prizes, which award one million pounds annually to groundbreaking environmental solutions, are among his most notable initiatives. Acknowledging the progress humanity has made, he said, “Humanity has the necessary tools,” but stressed that brilliant minds alone cannot tackle the issue without global cooperation.
Additionally, in his docuseries Guardians, William has spotlighted the work of wildlife rangers, individuals who risk their lives to protect endangered species. Calling it “one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet,” he praised the dedication of these rangers, highlighting the critical role they play in preserving biodiversity.
Despite ongoing personal concerns, including his family’s health, William remains committed to championing environmental causes. Reflecting on the 2022 Biodiversity Summit, he reiterated the goal of protecting 30% of Earth’s land and oceans by 2030, pushing for a future where sustainability and conservation are prioritized.
