Bhowana named Punjab’s cleanest tehsil in ‘Suthra Punjab’ campaign

JARANWALA: The Faisalabad Waste Management Company (FWMC) has removed over 615,400 tonnes of solid waste from 16 tehsils in the past six months, following the outsourcing of sanitation operations to private contractors.

This effort is part of the Punjab government’s “Suthra Punjab” initiative aimed at improving urban cleanliness and meeting UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

FWMC deployed more than 15,000 personnel, 5,199 waste containers, and 3,014 machinery units across the division to ensure regular waste collection from homes and public areas.

A mid-year evaluation by Punjab’s Local Government Department ranked Tehsil Bhowana of Chiniot district as the cleanest among 132 tehsils in the province. Bhowana stood out for sanitation standards, operational efficiency, and timely complaint resolution. Jalalpur Pirwala (Multan) and Bahawalnagar followed in second and third place.

The control room monitoring performance indicators found 26 tehsils scoring above 90 percent efficiency, including seven from Faisalabad Division.

Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq described the monitoring as crucial for sustaining the initiative. He noted that municipal bodies previously managed 28,000 tons of daily waste collection, while the new system targets 60,000 tons to ensure proper disposal and reduce environmental hazards.

Rafiq said control rooms at tehsil level and the outsourcing model have created over 100,000 jobs.

FWMC CEO Rauf Ahmad attributed Bhowana’s top rank to the dedication of field staff and cooperation from provincial and district administrations.
