Mild earthquake shakes Swat and surroundings

  • District admin hosts a flag-hoisting ceremony and rally to mark Youm-e-Takbeer

SWAT: Mild earthquake of 4.5 magnitude on the Richter Scale was felt in the Swat district and adjoining areas on Wednesday evening, prompting residents to evacuate buildings and gather in open spaces.

No casualties or damage to property were reported from any part of the region.

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre of the Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake measured 4.5 on the Richter scale, occurred at a depth of 220 kilometres.

“The epicenter was located in the Hindu Kush mountain range, a seismically active region that frequently experiences tectonic shifts.”

The tremors were brief but clearly noticeable, leading to a momentary panic among residents, according to the local people.

Local authorities confirmed that no loss of life or structural damage was reported till the filing of this report. Emergency services remained on alert in case of aftershocks.

The Hindu Kush region is part of an active fault line and has historically been the source of moderate to strong earthquakes that are often felt in northern Pakistan and Afghanistan.

District administration mark Youm-e-Takbeer

On the occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer, the district administration of Swat held a flag-hoisting ceremony followed by a special rally, officials said.

The event was attended by Assistant Commissioner Headquarters Swat, Dr. Nida Iqbal, Additional Assistant Commissioner-I Babuzi Ikhlaq Ahmed, along with representatives from the police, Rescue 1122, Civil Defense, Tehsil Municipal Administration Babuzi, education, and public health engineering departments, among others.

A large number of officials and members of the public also participated in the rally to celebrate the anniversary of becoming the first Muslim atomic power in the world.

Following the flag hoisting, the participants took part in a rally, during which they raised patriotic slogans celebrating the day when Pakistan’s defense became invincible and the significance of Youm-e-Takbeer.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Nida Iqbal said the day serves as a reminder of Pakistan’s unassailable defense capabilities. “Youm-e-Takbeer marks a milestone in our history when we send a clear message to the world that we are unmatched in defending our country,” she said.

The rally concluded with collective prayers for the Pakistan Armed Forces, national security, stability, and prosperity.
