Nine terrorists killed in KP operations amid rising security concerns

Security forces killed nine militants in three separate operations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the military’s media wing said on Sunday.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), an intelligence-based operation in Dera Ismail Khan led to the killing of four terrorists following an intense exchange of fire. The militants were described as Indian-sponsored and actively involved in attacks in the region.

A second operation in Tank district resulted in the deaths of two more terrorists, while a third encounter in the Bagh area of Khyber district saw three militants killed. The ISPR said weapons and ammunition were recovered from the sites.

Pakistan Army troops also conducted area clearance operations to eliminate any remaining threats. The statement reiterated the military’s resolve to end Indian-sponsored terrorism in the country.

Pakistan has seen a rise in militant violence since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan being most affected. Although the first quarter of 2025 showed a decrease in overall violence, security challenges persist.

A report by the Centre for Research and Security Studies noted a 13% decline in overall violence and fewer casualties among civilians and security forces compared to the last quarter of 2024. Still, the majority of deaths occurred in KP and Balochistan, which together accounted for 98% of all fatalities.

The report warned that if current trends continue, 2025 could witness over 3,600 fatalities, making it one of the deadliest years in recent history. Balochistan alone accounted for 35% of all fatalities and saw a 15% rise in violence compared to the previous quarter.
