The spokesperson for Pakistan’s military, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, has warned that any serious escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours could result in catastrophic consequences. Speaking in an interview with Sky News on Thursday, he said the world is aware of the nuclear threat, and any attempt by India to provoke war with Pakistan would lead to mutual destruction.
Lt Gen Chaudhry cautioned India of a swift and assured response should it violate the current ceasefire. The warning comes as an uneasy truce continues between Pakistan and India following military hostilities sparked by the deadly Pahalgam attack, in which 26 tourists were killed. India has blamed Pakistan for the incident, a claim Islamabad has firmly denied.
The Kashmir dispute remains a major point of contention, with Lt Gen Chaudhry accusing India of trying to internalize the issue and harassing the region’s predominantly Muslim population. He emphasized that the Kashmir conflict must be resolved by its people in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions.
The ongoing tension reflects decades of conflict since the partition of 1947, intensified by India’s revocation of Kashmir’s autonomy in August 2019. The military spokesperson’s remarks underline the fragile state of peace and the dangers of further escalation between the two nuclear powers.
