KP announces mountaineering tax exemption on Hindukush peaks

PESHAWAR: In a major move to promote adventure tourism and attract international climbers, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced a two-year exemption on mountaineering tax for expeditions in the Hindukush mountain range, effective from 2025 to 2026.

The announcement was made by the Director General of the KP Tourism Authority, who said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the province’s tourism potential and mark the 75th anniversary of the first successful summit of Tirich Mir—the highest peak in the Hindukush.

To commemorate this historic milestone, the provincial government has declared 2025 as the “Year of Tirich Mir.”

“This initiative aims to encourage both local and international climbers to explore the majestic peaks of the Hindukush while commemorating a landmark achievement in mountaineering history,” the DG Tourism said.

Officials believe the tax waiver will incentivise expeditions and tourism-related activity in remote mountain regions of the province, creating opportunities for local communities and strengthening the adventure tourism sector.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is home to some of the world’s most breathtaking mountain ranges, yet many of its peaks remain underexplored due to logistical challenges and limited promotion. The government hopes that targeted incentives such as the tax exemption will put the region on the global mountaineering map.

“This is not just a celebration of Tirich Mir, but also a signal to the world that KP is open for adventure and investment in tourism,” the DG added.
