India-Pakistan tensions lead to indefinite closure of Kartarpur Corridor

KARTARPUR: The Kartarpur Corridor in Narowal remains closed for the third consecutive day due to escalating tensions between Pakistan and India.

The management of the Kartarpur Corridor has now announced the indefinite closure of the corridor for Sikh pilgrims, citing security concerns.

The Zero Line Gate from the Indian side is also closed, preventing Sikh yatrees from traveling to Pakistan to perform their religious rituals at the revered Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur.

Earlier, on May 8, 2025, the Indian government had temporarily closed the Kartarpur Corridor, citing security concerns amid the heightened India-Pakistan tensions. The Indian authorities confirmed that the corridor would remain closed indefinitely, with no specific timeline provided for its reopening.

The closure of the corridor is a significant blow to the thousands of Sikh devotees who regularly visit the gurdwara, where Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, spent the final years of his life. Since its reopening in 2019, the Kartarpur Corridor has allowed visa-free access for Indian pilgrims to the holy site, and its closure represents a setback in efforts to foster religious harmony between the two neighboring countries.

The Kartarpur Corridor, stretching from Dera Baba Nanak in India to Kartarpur in Pakistan, was established as part of a landmark agreement between the two nations. It had been seen as a symbol of goodwill and religious cooperation, offering a rare opportunity for religious pilgrims to visit the sacred gurdwara without the need for a visa.
