LAHORE: The Punjab government has ordered the closure of all educational institutions across the province for two days, citing a deteriorating law and order situation, Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat announced on Thursday.
All public and private schools, colleges, and universities will remain shut on Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10, with normal academic activities expected to resume from Monday, May 12.
While no specific threat was detailed, the decision comes amid rising regional tensions following deadly cross-border hostilities between India and Pakistan. The education department has instructed all institutions to comply with the order and urged students and staff to stay updated via official government communications.
This precautionary closure follows recent developments in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), where 22 tourists were killed in an attack India has blamed on Pakistan—an accusation strongly rejected by Islamabad.
India’s response included suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and closing the Wagah-Attari land border. On the night of May 6 and 7, Indian forces reportedly launched missile strikes on six locations in Pakistan. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), at least 31 civilians, including women and children, were killed and 71 others injured in the attacks.
