ISLAMABAD: Azerbaijan has expressed strong support for Pakistan as tensions escalate with India, condemning recent Indian military actions and calling for a peaceful resolution through diplomatic means.
In a formal letter addressed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the Azerbaijani government conveyed solidarity with the Pakistani leadership and people. The message was personally delivered by Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Khazar Farhadov.
According to an official statement, Azerbaijan offered condolences to the families of those affected by the recent hostilities and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. The statement reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s commitment to Pakistan’s sovereignty and stability during what it called a “critical time.”
Ambassador Farhadov conveyed best wishes from his government, emphasizing that Azerbaijan stands with Pakistan and supports efforts to resolve regional conflicts peacefully.
Tensions between Pakistan and India have surged following an attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) that killed 22 tourists. India blamed Pakistan for the incident—a claim Islamabad strongly denies.
In response, India announced the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and the closure of the Wagah-Attari border crossing. Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC) condemned the moves, warning that any effort to block water flow would be treated as a declaration of war under international law.
The situation further deteriorated on the night of May 6–7, when Indian forces reportedly carried out missile strikes on multiple sites inside Pakistan. According to the DG ISPR, at least 31 civilians, including women and children, were killed and 71 others injured.
