LAHORE: Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated following a sudden surge in the Chenab River’s water flow, raising concerns of water aggression from India. The inflow increased dramatically from 3,100 cusecs on Monday night to 26,000 cusecs by Tuesday morning.
This surge comes shortly after India suspended the World Bank-brokered Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) on April 23, citing Pakistan’s alleged involvement in the killing of 26 tourists in Pahalgam. Punjab Irrigation Minister Kazim Pirzada expressed concern over the “unnatural” change in the river’s flow, affecting areas with fewer water alternatives. The situation intensified with India’s unnotified “reservoir flushing” at the Salal and Baglihar projects, causing potential disruptions downstream. In response, Pakistan has warned that any diversion of its water resources will be met with a strong response.
Additionally, India is accelerating the construction of hydropower projects on the Chenab River, which primarily supplies water to Pakistan.
