The completion of the Nai Gaj Dam, a long-awaited rainwater storage project, will be delayed by three years due to the need to acquire approximately 295 acres of private land in Dadu district. The project, which was first launched in 2009 with a budget of Rs 17 billion, has faced multiple delays, with costs increasing from Rs 17 billion to Rs 47.7 billion by 2019.
A review meeting chaired by Divisional Commissioner Hyderabad, Bilal Ahmed Memon, addressed issues such as road construction and security for the dam. The commissioner assured that land surveys had been completed, and compensation would soon be distributed to affected landowners. He emphasized transparency in the acquisition and resettlement processes, and a joint committee will oversee these efforts.
The dam, designed to store 300,000 acre-feet of water from streams flowing from the Kirthar mountain range, is now expected to be fully operational within three years. Additionally, further funding is needed for road construction, and a comprehensive security plan is being developed.
