Islamabad Sunday market fire extinguished; over 100 shops damaged

A horrific fire engulfed more than 300 shops in Islamabad’s I-9 sector while nine fire brigade vehicles and 60 firefighters were engaged in extinguishing the fire.

Firefighters from Rawalpindi were also summoned. Rescue officials said that initially, the fire broke out in the Landa Bazaar section of the market. Assistant Commissioner I-9 Islamabad reached the site to supervise the rescue operation coordination.

Islamabad Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa said the fire has been completely extinguished. “There were 2,743 shops, out of which 500 shops have been damaged. Thirty-one fire brigade vehicles are working on the spot. Water bowsers are also taking part in the relief operations,” the chief commissioner said.

He added that 250 rescue personnel are currently conducting rescue operations.
