Pakistan desires productive engagement with all regional players, COAS tells US lawmakers

Army chief stresses need for coordinated efforts for economic uplift of Afghan people

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa Saturday told senior parliamentarians from the United States of America (USA) that Pakistan desired to maintain productive bilateral engagement with “all the regional players” and wished for peaceful, diversified and sustained relations.

The army chief expressed these remarks during a meeting with the members of the US Senate Armed Services and Intelligence Committee headed by Senator Angus King.

An official statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that the delegation included Senator Richard Burr, Senator John Cornyn and Senator Ben Sasse. US Charge d’ Affaires to Pakistan Angela Aggeler also accompanied the delegation.

 

During the meeting, according to the statement, matters of mutual interest, the current security situation in Afghanistan and bilateral cooperation in various fields were discussed.

On the occasion, General Qamar said that Pakistan desires to maintain productive bilateral engagement with all the regional players and wished for peaceful, diversified and sustained relations.

ISPR said that the COAS also reiterated the urgency for global convergence on Afghanistan to avoid looming humanitarian crises and the need for coordinated efforts for the economic uplift of the Afghan people.

He thanked the senators for their efforts in forging a mutual understanding of geopolitical and security situations in view of challenges ahead.

The official communiqué stated that the visiting dignitaries appreciated Pakistan’s role in the Afghan situation, special efforts for border management, role in regional stability and pledged to play their part for furthering diplomatic cooperation with Pakistan at all levels.
