Civil servant’s judicial remand extended in Ashiana housing scam

LAHORE: An accountability court in Lahore on Wednesday extended the judicial remand of former Lahore Development Authority (LDA) director general Ahad Khan Cheema till November 9 in the Ashiana-e-Iqbal Housing case.

According to the details, accountability judge Amjad Nazir Chaudhry postponed the hearing in the case without any proceedings as lawyers were on a strike.

The hearing of the case will resume on Monday during which the defense counsel will cross-examine the prosecution witnesses.

Cheema was arrested in 2018 after he failed to appear before a combined investigation team of the National Accountability Bureau in connection with the investigation in the scam.

According to the agency, Cheema had allegedly misused his authority and with criminal intent prepared, processed, recommended and got approved a fraudulent and illegal request by awarding contract of the Rs14 billion project.

The prosecution alleged that the former LDA chief had awarded the contract for the housing scheme to Bismillah Engineering Services in return for 32 kanals of land. According to the prosecution, the land was transferred to various members of Cheema’s family, including his cousin and his sister.
