KARACHI: The fourth death anniversary of legendary qawwal Amjad Farid Sabri was observed on Monday.
Amjad, the son of renowned qawwali singer Ghulam Farid Sabri, was shot dead in June 2016 in Karachi’s Liaqatabad area. The responsibility was later claimed by banned militant outfit TTP which said it killed Sabri for committing “blasphemy”.
The nephew of Maqbool Ahmed Sabri of the famed Sabri Brothers, Amjad started singing qawwalis at age of 12. Sabri continued his family’s legacy and frequently travelled to the US and Europe where he earned the nickname of “rock star” of qawwali.
Some of his most loved pieces include Tajdar-e-Haram, Bhar Do Jholi Meri, Jis Ne Madine Jana, More Haji Piya, Tauba Qubool Ho Meri.
Amjad was laid to rest in Karachi with his funeral attended by thousands of his fans.
