Retired military lawyer ‘abducted’ for advocating recovery of missing persons

Unidentified armed persons abducted retired military lawyer, Colonel (r) Inamur Rahim, from his residence in Rawalpindi on Monday for advocating the recovery of missing persons and his whereabouts are still unknown, according to media reports.

As per the complaint lodged with the police by the retired army officer’s son, Rahim was taken away by armed person clad in black uniform in double cabin cars. The complaint added that the family was threatened by the kidnappers that they would have to bear consequences if the incident was reported to the police.

The incident drew condemnation from the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC). The association demanded that the government and the concerned institutions take required action to ensure the retired army officer’s release and the arrest of his kidnappers.

“An advocate is being victimised for his having vocally raising voice and lodging protests against constant incidents of missing persons and even approaching the courts of law for their safe recovery,” said PBC Chairman Syed Amjad Shah.

It is worth mentioning here that in 2012, when Rahim was returning from a family funeral to his home in the garrison city, three vehicles had surrounded the taxi in which he was traveling and pushed it off the road.

He told The New York Times that six unidentified men had leapt out and attacked him, raining blows on his head and upper torso. “I resisted, so they attacked me with punches and sticks,” he had said during an interview at a nearby hospital, where he was treated for cuts to the nose and head. “They said they were teaching me a lesson for what I was doing.”

The reason for this assault was reportedly his opposition to the three-year extension of service for former army chief General (r) Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.
