ECP lays out plans for presidential election

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has prepared a summary stating that the presidential elections can be held in the last week of August or the first week of September.

President Mamnoon Hussain is due to step down from the post on September 9. Constitutional requirements necessitate the ECP to submit a summary of the elections to the chief election commissioner.

A final date for the elections will be announced once the national and provincial legislatures have taken their oaths.

Presidential elections have to be held within 30 days after the previous president steps down.

National Assembly, Senate and the provincial assemblies comprise the electoral college with the president elected through a secret ballot by members of the college.
