PTA extends deadline to block smuggled phones

ISLAMABAD: The deadline to curb substandard and smuggled mobile phones was extended by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

PTA’s Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) was launched in May.

A statement by the PTA read, “This unique system will curb illegal imports and facilitate legitimate device importers, and mobile device users.”

“In short, DIRBS and its successful implementation will benefit the entire mobile ecosystem of Pakistan,” it added.

Users can text their mobile phone’s IMEI numbers to 8484, PTA’s short message service, and check whether their devices comply with PTA regulations.
