Pakistani comedian and film actor Munawar Zarif, referred to as Shehenshah-i-Zarafat (King of Humour) by his admirers passes away at Shalimar Hospital in Lahore on 29 April, 1976 at the young age of 36.
Born in pre-partition Gujranwala, the Punjabi film actor started his career as a comedian but went on to become an iconic figure in Pakistani cinema. Starring in over 300 films, his most famous movies include Heer Ranjha (1970), Jeera Blade (1973), Naukar Wohti Da (1974), Sharif Badmash (1975) and others.

The Austrian-British Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein passes away on 29 April, 1951. Considered one of the most influential philosophical figures of the 20th Century, his most famous works include Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus and the posthumously published Philosophical Investigations.

The British explorer Captain James Cook’s landing at Botany Bay on Sunday April 29, 1770 sparks British interest in the territory. Australia was later colonised by the British.
US involvement in Vietnam war comes to an end
Final evacuation of US troops and refugees as part of Operation Frequent Wind.
On April 29, 1975, the US government ordered troops and refugees to immediately withdraw from Saigon as the North Vietnamese forces close into the city. US involvement in the war ended afterwards.
Alfred Hitchcock passes away
The ‘Master of Suspense’ and one of the most influential figures of 20th century cinema, Sir Alfred Hitchcock dies on 29 April, 1980. He directed over 53 films in his six-decade long career and revolutionised cinema. His style, termed “Hitchcockian”, would later influence some of the most famous directors in cinema. Shadow of a Doubt (1943), North by Northwest (1959) and Psycho (1960) are among is best-known films.
The Dachau concentration camp is liberated by US forces on April 29, 1945. The Nazi government sent Jews, criminals and citizens from occupied territories to the camp. Close to 35,000 people died at Dachau during Nazi control. Acute starvation, suicide, medical experiments and execution were some of the causes behind those deaths.
