SC all set to take up infant mortality rate issue

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Saturday ordered to fix the case on infant mortality rate and health issues in the third week of March.

The CJP took suo moto notice after news reports mentioned the alarming mortality rate of infants, newborns in Pakistan.

During the hearing, the chief justice noted that Pakistan has the highest infant mortality rate and highly irresponsible attitude of parents towards newborns are embarrassing the country.

Improving the health and education facilities for the people is the responsibility of the state but unfortunately, Pakistan still has the worst infant mortality rate in the world.

Meanwhile, another applicant told the court that after notice by the CJP, the prices of some life-saving medicines have reduced up to one-tenth of their earlier prices.

While talking to media, Family Planning Association of Pakistan Director Sarfaraz Kazmi, said that above 40 percent of Pakistani people still prefer midwives, quacks, hakeems and untrained medics for health consultancy.
