KARACHI: A four-member delegation of a China’s private company on Monday called on Mayor Waseem Akhtar in his office and discussed with him cleanliness in the provincial capital.

While giving a detailed presentation on the Chinese company’s working in Karachi, the mayor was told that the Kangjie Sanitation Group was a large sanitation enterprise with the state grade ‘A’ qualifications of sanitation and road cleaning.

The Kangjie has up to now successively taken over 400 sanitation projects in 18 provinces (such as Shandong, Anhui, Hebei, Jiangsu, Henan and others) in more than 80 cities in China. The company has taken the opportunity of the national development strategy One Belt One Road and extended into the international market.

It signed the sanitation service agreement with Karachi, Bogota in Columbia, Cotonou in Benin, Accra in Ghana and Quebec City of Canada. On the contract of lifting garbage from South and East districts in Karachi, they said that the contract signed on Oct 26, 2016 and East district area on Nov 8, 2016 and later operations were started in district South on March 1, 2017 and in district East on the May 1, 2017 with 193 vehicles with the total investment of $30 million.

It was informed that the district of Beijing has 250 garbage removal vehicles whereas in district South Karachi only 80 vehicles are available. The company is taking steps including hiring manpower for sweeping in order to fulfil demand in consultation with UCs and these UCs will be organised and their staff will be brought on board for the door-to-door collection of garbage.

On the occasion, Mayor Waseem said that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) encourages and welcome such endeavors that were aimed at making Karachi clean. He said the city should be cleaned and removal of garbage was responsibility of the local bodies.

He said that Karachi was one of the biggest cities of the world where over 12000 tons of garbage was generated daily. In order to remove this waste, the city needs highly professional and modern approach with committed teams and infrastructure. “We want to see all districts of Karachi to be cleaned and made free of encroachments,” he said.
