Open letter: Imran Khan slams UN for hypocrisy over persecution of Rohingya community

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) head Imran Khan condemned the silence and inaction of the United Nation (UN) on the genocide and plight of Rohingya minority in Myanmar in an open letter to UN Secretary General António Guterres.

The letter recalls that earlier in June 2015 also, Imran Khan had written a letter to the UN for the same but nothing happened and now this hideous cycle is repeating itself as international community stands silent observer.

Khan in his letter said the treatments of Myanmar government towards the minority Muslim group has shown the ineptitude to the UN to deal with the issues of violence and upholding of people’s rights.

“The principle of humanitarian intervention was specifically added to the UN mandate in the face of the Rwandan genocide, but the UN has once again failed to protect people from persecution and genocide: this time the Rohingyas of Myanmar,” Khan said.

“I call on you, as the Secretary General, to move the UN Security Council to end the persecution and genocide of Rohingyas within Myanmar and to bring to an end their inhumane plight as starving, disease-ridden refugees are denied basic shelter, under Chapter VII of the UN Charter,” he said.
