Islamabad police has adopted a policy to humiliate bikers in the federal capital, as almost every biker is forced to stop at several pickets and face humiliation and embarrassment.
The bikers are not allowed to leave, regardless of any emergency, until they grease the palms of venal police officials.
Jahangir Khan, a resident of Islamabad, said that he was stopped by police at G-7/1 near ZTBL week ago at 12:30 AM. He said that he was not only ill-treated but one police personnel also came and switched off his bike and took keys saying, “Come to the police station to get keys.”
He said that he had all documents including identification card, bike documents but he was black mailed that his bike would be booked under section 550 and he would have to go court in order to release it. The other option that he was given was to ‘settle issues’ then and there. “I paid 70 rupees to flee,” he said.
Another citizen of sector G-10, Mohsin Ali, said that police stopped him at the roundabout of G-10 a few days back, where he was humiliated, abused, and was subjected to torture. He said that he had all documents but they did not let them go. The police official, when having nothing to pressurise the guy, started making bizarre claims in an attempt to further torture the citizen. “You stared at me? How dare you stare, wait until I get back to you,” the police officer said. After almost 10 minutes, the police allowed Mohsin to go.
Similarly, there are hundreds and thousands of bikers in the capital who are humiliated by the behaviour of police personals who are supposed to secure the city.
Imran Ali said, “Islamabad police inspector general has to look into the matter and educate them through seminars, conferences that how to deal with citizens.” He said that if two or three police personals get suspended by the high-ups on the said matter, then others may understand and teach themselves.
“Is there any forum to register their complaint against those police officials who misbehaved? Or if yes than police bosses must have to start an awareness campaign to brought this in the knowledge of every layman,” he said.
When contacted, IGP’s spokesman, ZiaUl Qamar said that if anyone feels insulted or misbehaved with or harassed by any police official than he should file a complaint against the officer in the concerned police station and if he/she was not entertained than they should come to police line. “Police was told to hold one-wheeler bikers, not all citizens,” he maintained.
