Court convicts five in NADRA kiosks embezzlement case

An accountability court on Monday awarded five years sentence to five accused each in an embezzlement case of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) kiosks in Lahore.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,677,000, Rs 630,000, Rs 1,814,000, Rs 666,000 and Rs 271,000 on convicts Hafiz Muhammad Mashood, Muhammad Saleem, Mian Muhammad Younis, Mubashir and M Nazir Bazmi, respectively, besides disqualifying them for 10 years.

Judge Waseem Akhtar announced the verdict after hearing arguments of parties and examining the available evidence. National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had arrested the accused after NADRA approached it for Rs 10 million embezzlement in E-billing at eight kiosks in Lahore. It was disclosed that the convicts – the owners of NADRA kiosks – used to invest public money deposited with them in their personal businesses.
