KARACHI: Amir Akhtar Hashmi, the pilot who was caught sleeping during a flight, has now issued a contradictory statement.
In his earlier statement released on Monday, he said that all major airlines on long flights grant at least one non-rated co-pilot to accompany the rated co-pilot so that the captain could take a nap out of the cockpit.
In the flight mentioned in the story, he said, both co-pilots were rated on B777, but despite this fact, he did not go out of the cockpit for more than a few minutes.
He now says that he was travelling as a passenger in the aforementioned flight and that the picture used by publications was an old one.
The passenger who complained said in her report that the captain was found sleeping on duty. The management accepted her report, as well as the allegation levelled by the passenger, and took him off flying duties.
A PIA spokesperson also revealed that an inquiry into the report was under way.
