The death toll in beach tragedy rose to 39, most of them youth, till Saturday morning while search for the other missing picnickers was completed the same day.
According to details available with Rescue-1299 centre set up at the commissioner’s office, 34 bodies had been handed over to the families of the deceased after proper verification while one unclaimed body was kept at the mortuary of Jinnah Hospital.
Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui personally monitored the rescue operation being conducted with the help of Pakistan Navy, Fire Brigade and other city government departments along the beaches.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has also formed an investigation committee to probe the tragic incident.
The senior member of the board of revenue will be the head of the commission whereas interior secretary and administration secretary will be its members. The team will present its report to the CM in five days.
The chief secretary has issued a notification for formation of the commission.
The probe will determine the people responsible for the incident besides suggestions to control such tragedies in future. More than three dozens holiday-makers had drowned in the sea while bathing at Clifton and Hawke’s Bay beaches on the second day of Eidul Fitr.
The rescue teams recovered 32 bodies from different points of Clifton beach while three from Hawke’s Bay.
