Four workers died and another eight were injured when poisonous gas leaked at a pharmaceutical factory in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, police said Wednesday.

Preliminary investigations suggested that hydrogen sulphide gas escaped from a pipeline late Tuesday at the Sequent Scientific factory in Boisar, 120 kilometres (75 miles) north of Mumbai.

“Another ten workers who complained of nausea are recovering in hospital. They are out of danger,” a Boisar police official told AFP, adding that the leak had been plugged overnight.

Three managers at the plant were being held by police, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.
