Sindh health minister links rising C-section deliveries to maternal deaths
Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho warned that rising Caesarean deliveries are contributing to more maternal deaths. She urged stronger family planning, counselling for women after multiple C-sections, and expanded maternal care.
KARACHI: Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho has expressed concern over the growing number of Caesarean-section deliveries in the province, saying the trend is contributing to an increase in maternal deaths.
Speaking at the fourth International Family Planning Summit, titled “Maa Rahe Salamat”, at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), the minister said the provincial government was taking steps to improve maternal and child healthcare across Sindh.
Dr Pechuho said the rising number of C-section deliveries had become a serious public health concern and stressed the importance of strengthening family planning services. She suggested that women undergoing a third Caesarean section should be counselled on permanent family planning options to reduce health risks associated with multiple surgical deliveries.
She added that the Sindh government was expanding access to healthcare by improving transport facilities for expectant mothers and establishing Birth Station Centres across the province to provide better maternal and newborn care.
The minister also said Sindh continued to lead the country in family planning and maternal healthcare initiatives, with efforts focused on improving healthcare services for women and reducing preventable maternal deaths.
