Lt Gen Aamer Raza promoted to four-star general, named strategic command chief

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has promoted Lieutenant General Aamer Raza to the rank of four-star general and appointed him Commander National Strategic Command, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

The PMO said the prime minister congratulated General Raza on his elevation and wished him well for taking on what it described as an important responsibility.

The office of Commander National Strategic Command was created under the 27th Constitutional Amendment passed last year, which reorganised parts of the military command structure. Under those changes, the post took over the nuclear management role that had previously rested with the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, a position that was subsequently abolished.

The amendment also created the post of Chief of Defence Forces as part of a unified command structure across the armed forces. Under the revised framework, the appointment, reappointment and extension of the Commander National Strategic Command are linked exclusively to the recommendation of the Chief of Defence Forces.
