China, ASEAN call for dialogue on Middle East, strengthen energy cooperation

MANILA: China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have issued a joint statement expressing concern over the regional and global repercussions of the escalating situation in the Middle East, while reaffirming their commitment to strengthening regional energy cooperation and promoting peace through dialogue.

The statement was released following the China-ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Manila on July 22.

China and ASEAN said they had maintained close communication and cooperation on international and regional issues of mutual concern, noting that the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East posed serious risks to civilian lives, regional stability and the global economy.

The two sides warned that the spillover effects of the conflict threatened trade, investment, energy supplies and food security across the region and beyond.

Emphasising the need for a peaceful resolution, the statement stressed that disputes should be settled through dialogue, diplomacy and other peaceful means in accordance with international law.

China and ASEAN also acknowledged Beijing's efforts to promote peace in the region, including China's four-point proposal aimed at advancing stability and de-escalation in the Middle East.

The joint statement reaffirmed the commitment of both sides to enhancing regional cooperation and working together to safeguard peace, stability and sustainable economic development.
