LONDON: Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has paid tribute to Kevin Keegan after the former Newcastle United boss died at the age of 75 following a battle with cancer.
Keegan, a former Liverpool and England striker, was one of the defining figures of English football and is remembered in part for his intense managerial rivalry with Ferguson during the 1995-96 Premier League title race. Manchester United eventually overtook Newcastle to win the championship after Keegan's side had held a 12-point lead.
Speaking to Track Radio on Tuesday, Ferguson said he had long admired the work Keegan did at Newcastle, where he took charge when the club was struggling and helped transform its fortunes. Keegan first kept the club from dropping into the third tier and then led it to promotion to the Premier League in 1993.
Ferguson said Newcastle's rise under Keegan was driven by energy on and off the pitch, with the team gaining a reputation as The Entertainers because of its expansive and exciting style.
