Lamine Yamal's rapid rise takes him from Rocafonda to World Cup glory

BARCELONA: Lamine Yamal's ascent has been so swift that, at 19, he is already widely regarded as the leading young footballer in the game and, by some observers, the best player in the world.

The Spain winger, who turned 19 on Monday, July 13, was part of the team that beat Argentina 1-0 in Sunday's Fifa World Cup final, a match presented as Lionel Messi's last World Cup appearance.

Yamal has often been defined by his composure on the pitch. In an interview with a foreign publication, he said:

It's about being calm. When I'm in the area with the ball, I decide what happens.

The remark reflects the qualities repeatedly associated with him: control, technical skill and a sharp reading of the game.

Roots in Rocafonda

Yamal grew up in Rocafonda, a working-class area of Mataro near Barcelona. His father worked as a building painter and his mother was 16 when he was born. His parents separated when he was still very young.

He has said that although he was raised in a caring home, the family often faced financial hardship. Speaking to Spanish newspaper El Pais last month, Yamal said:

When you're young, sometimes you want things and can't have them. So you learn to accept that your life is like that and to appreciate everything your parents do. Seeing my mother struggle, seeing her try everything to make me happy… all of it made me grow up earlier.

He developed his game on a concrete football court near his home, a place he has frequently described as the last place where he felt fear while playing.

Barcelona identified his talent when he was seven, and he joined the club's La Masia academy at 12.

Early praise and breakthrough

Even during his youth years, coaches and club officials highlighted not only his technique but also his decision-making. Former Barcelona sporting director Ramon Planes told ESPN:

The best and most remarkable thing about him is his football intelligence. He is an all-round footballer.

Former Barcelona coach Xavi, who brought the 15-year-old into first-team training during the 2022-23 season, told The Athletic:

You could already see something different, something special. He made excellent decisions. He rarely made mistakes.

Yamal made his Barcelona debut in April 2023, only months before his 16th birthday, and entered the starting lineup in August that year. In a short span, he became Barcelona's youngest starter, youngest league scorer and youngest player to appear in El Clasico. He also debuted for Spain, scored in his first international appearance, signed a new contract carrying a $1.1 billion release clause and scored his first club goal.

Defining moments for Spain and Barcelona

His emergence continued at the European Championship, where he provided assists against Croatia, Georgia and Germany before producing one of the tournament's standout moments in the semi-final against France.

After France midfielder Adrien Rabiot suggested Yamal would have to deliver even more against his side, the Spain winger posted on social media: Only speak when it's time to say checkmate.

He then scored as Spain beat France 2-1. Reacting to that strike, Zinedine Zidane said:

I've never seen anything like that in my life.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente called it a touch of genius, while Xavi said: The bigger the challenge, the more Lamine steps up.

At club level, his displays against Inter Milan in the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League semi-finals were also highlighted. Inter coach Simone Inzaghi described him as:

a phenomenon born every 50 years.

Yamal later finished second in the Ballon d'Or standings and took over Barcelona's No 10 shirt, previously worn by Messi, Ronaldinho and Diego Maradona.

Setbacks and mounting expectations

His progress has also included injuries and uneven form. He did not play from April 22 until Spain's World Cup opener against Cape Verde. He returned against Saudi Arabia but was taken off at half-time, before completing the full 90 minutes in Spain's Round of 16 win over Portugal.

Off the field, Yamal has spoken about being recognised since the age of 13 and managing schoolwork while playing at the European Championship, where his performances turned him into a global star.

Despite his age, he has already made 32 international appearances, almost double the number Pele had at the same stage of his life. Maradona had 12 caps as a teenager, Messi 10 and Cristiano Ronaldo two. His scoring numbers at that age are also ahead of both Messi and Ronaldo.

Even so, De la Fuente has urged restraint over comparisons with Messi. Before the Saudi Arabia match, the Spain coach said:

We have to let him follow his own path.
