Ambassador Imran Siddiqui presents credentials to ECO chief in Tehran

TEHRAN: Ambassador Imran Ahmed Siddiqui on Monday formally presented his credentials to Economic Cooperation Organisation Secretary General Ambassador Asad Majeed Khan as Pakistan’s permanent representative to the ECO at the organisation’s secretariat in Tehran.

According to a press release, Siddiqui, who is also Pakistan’s envoy to Iran, used the meeting to reiterate Islamabad’s continued commitment to the regional bloc, of which Pakistan is a founding member. The ECO is an intergovernmental organisation focused on advancing economic cooperation, trade, and development among member countries, including Pakistan, Iran, and Türkiye as well as other states from the region.

The statement said the two sides also reviewed preparations for an upcoming ministerial meeting that Pakistan is set to host during its chairmanship. During the discussion, Siddiqui highlighted the organisation’s role in promoting trade within the region, broader economic integration, and improved regional connectivity, while also stressing the importance of expanding ECO engagement with other regions amid changing regional and global circumstances.

The press release further said Siddiqui expressed Pakistan’s resolve to help strengthen, diversify, and reinvigorate the organisation in coordination with other member states. It added that he also praised the secretary general for his leadership and stewardship of the ECO.

Recent appointment

Pakistan recently posted Siddiqui as its ambassador to neighbouring Iran. Before taking up his current assignment, he had served as Pakistan’s ambassador to Bangladesh.

The credential presentation marks the formal start of his role as Pakistan’s permanent representative to the Tehran-based organisation alongside his ambassadorial responsibilities in Iran.
