Gavi eyes $600m in restored US funding for malaria vaccines

ISLAMABAD: Vaccine alliance Gavi said on Monday it expects to use $600 million in US funding that is due to be restored to strengthen malaria and other immunisation programmes.

According to Gavi, its board will take the final decision on how the money is allocated, but malaria is expected to be a major area of focus.

The $600 million had been approved by the US Congress for 2025 and 2026, but was withheld by US Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr. Kennedy stated in June last year that Gavi had ignored safety concerns, though he did not provide evidence.

Gavi also said it is addressing US conditions linked to the phase-out of the preservative thimerosal in other vaccines in its portfolio. The US has not made a pledge for Gavi’s future work, but last week US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington should re-engage with the group and that the $600 million would be sent soon, without giving a timeline.
