ISLAMABAD: Defence counsel for Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi on Thursday asked the Islamabad High Court to summon senior prison authorities and hospital officials, along with complete medical records, during the hearing of their appeal in the £190 million case.
Appearing before the court, lawyer Salman Safdar requested that Punjab Inspector General of Prisons Mian Farooq Nazir and representatives from Shifa International Hospital be called to explain the medical condition and detention circumstances of his clients.
Safdar raised serious concerns about Imran Khan’s health, telling the court that his eyesight had deteriorated significantly, with only 15% vision remaining in one eye. He claimed the damage appeared permanent and noted that repeated hospital visits suggested treatment beyond the capacity of jail facilities.
The counsel also questioned why the former premier and his wife were allegedly being held in solitary confinement, arguing that prolonged isolation amounts to torture. He added that despite court permission, he had faced difficulties meeting his clients, stating that his last meeting with Bushra Bibi was in December 2025.
The court, headed by Chief Justice Sarfraz Dogar, asked the defence to focus on the main appeal, indicating that the case could be decided swiftly if arguments were scheduled. However, Safdar insisted that applications for suspension of sentence should be taken up first.
The hearing also touched on procedural matters, including documentation and scheduling flexibility, with the court noting that appeals could be heard within days if required.
Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi are currently incarcerated at Adiala Jail. The former prime minister has been in custody since August 2023 and is serving a sentence in the £190 million corruption case, while also facing multiple other legal proceedings.
Earlier, on the directions of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, a report submitted by the defence highlighted Imran Khan’s eye condition, after which the court allowed access to personal physicians and limited contact with his family.
The couple were also sentenced in December 2025 in a separate case related to the Toshakhana-II reference, further complicating their ongoing legal battle.
